The Puerto Rican mayor of San Juan Carmen Yulín Cruz endorsed former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine this week in his run for Florida governor.
In an ad released Tuesday, Cruz recounts a call she got from Levine shortly after Hurricane Maria, “this guy I had never heard from, I had never met.”
“So here’s this guy that doesn’t know me, that felt our pain and was willing and able to use the power that he had in Miami to make sure that we were taken care of in San Juan and in other cities of Puerto Rico,” Cruz says in the ad.
Levine is running against Gwen Graham, Andrew Gillum, Chris King and Jeff Greene in a Democratic primary.
The new endorsement comes after Cruz backed Rep. Darren Soto, who is facing Alan Grayson in a Democratic primary, and Sen. Bill Nelson, who is expected to face Republican Gov. Rick Scott on November’s ballot.
